We are proud to be supporting 100 youth sail training placements in this year’s Tall Ships Races.
With the fleet due in port at Lerwick between Wednesday 26 July and Saturday 29 July, it is certain to be an exciting time for all. As a result of generous sponsorship received, fundraising and grant awards achieved, the young people participating, will not require to pay for their sailing experience.
As final ship reservations and travel arrangements are made, we are very conscious there were many who were unable to secure a place through our schemes, and others who may be seeking a sail training experience independently.
Sail Training International which organises the annual Tall Ships Races, has a bursary fund to which young people who have never taken part in a Tall Ships’ Race or Regatta can apply for financial support. The Oman Bursary scheme offers grants of up to £500 to individuals who would personally have difficulty funding a voyage. Details of the Oman Bursary Fund, an application form and the criteria used for making an award, are all available on Sail Training International’s website.
With limited time until this year’s race will begin in Den Helder, Netherlands, spaces may be limited on participating vessels. If you are considering applying for funding, why not consider the Tall Ships Magellan-Elcano series which commences in Falmouth (England) on Tuesday 15 August with a race to A Coruna (Spain), then on to Lisbon (Portugal), before the series ends in Cadiz (Spain) on Sunday 10 September.
Alternatively, you may find through chatting with the visiting vessels at Lerwick in July, some may be looking for crew and selling berths for the race from Lerwick to Arendal (Norway). These last-minute opportunities are worth grabbing if they are available!
To take advantage of these possible ways of sailing with the Tall Ships fleet, it is essential to have a valid passport for travel and be prepared to meet the cost of travel to and from the ship.
