Sail Training Shetland Succeeds in Gaining Charitable Status

January 19th 2010

The organisation was formed early last year to provide opportunities for young people between the ages of 15 and 25yrs, to participate in the adventure, challenge and experience of Sail Training.

In its first year, sponsorship raised through the local community provided eight young trainees with the opportunity of a lifetime to take part in The Small Ships’ Race between Greenock and Belfast onboard Shetland’s own sail training vessel, Swan.

Plans are currently being developed for trainees to join sail training vessels taking part in The 2010 Tall Ships Races on the race leg between Kristiansand, Norway and Hartlepool, UK in August.

Chairman of Sail Training Shetland, Peter Malcolmson said, “We are delighted to have gained Charitable Status. This will hopefully widen the scope for us to attract further funding to give even more youngsters access to the experience of Sail Training in the years ahead. We would also like to actively encourage young people to sign up to our mailing list at www.tallshipsraceslerwick.com to receive information on future opportunities and general event information ahead of The Tall Ships visit to Shetland in July 2011.”
