Sail Training Shetland Trainees meet The Princess Royal

August 4th 2023

On 28th July Sail Training Shetland’s 2023 placements gathered in Fort Charlotte for a photocall and to meet HRH The Princess Royal

The trainees, 50 of whom were from Shetland and 50 from other Scottish ports, gathered together during the crew change day in Lerwick, with 76 trainees having just completed a 13-day sailing experience from Fredrikstad to Lerwick and the other 24 about to embark on a 10-day sailing experience from Lerwick to Arendal.

Her Royal Highness, who is an experienced sailor, knows the many benefits of sail training and was very interested to hear about their experiences. She spent time speaking to many of the trainees as well as members of the Sail Training Shetland committee, who volunteer their time to provide these sail training opportunities.

Peter Campbell, Chairperson of the STS committee, said: “We were honoured that HRH included a visit to our trainees in her busy schedule. HRH was very knowledgeable on the techniques of sailing and the benefits of sail training for young people, and took time to speak with our trainees about their sailing experiences and share some of her own. I’m sure her visit will be one of the highlights for our trainees.”

Her Royal Highness visited Shetland on 27th & 28th July, when the Tall Ships fleet was in Lerwick as part of the Tall Ships Races 2023. Whilst in the isles she also attended the Captains’ Dinner, visited event sites and met sponsors, crew members and event organisers.
