Lerwick to be a host port again in 2023

The official announcement that Lerwick has been selected for the third time to be a host port for the spectacular Tall Ships Races was made today (Tuesday 11 May).

It is with great anticipation that Sail Training Shetland will work with the organising company Shetland Tall Ships Ltd on the trainee recruitment for the series delivering memorable life-changing experiences for youth aged between 15-25 years.

Described as ‘Europe’s largest, free family festival’, the expected visit to Lerwick, will take place between 26-29 July. Lerwick is the only Scottish location in the series, which will also call at Host Ports in Den Helder, Hartlepool and Fredrikstad.

Chairman of Sail Training Shetland, Peter Campbell, commented: “Since the last event here at Lerwick in 2011, we have delivered over 190 sail training placements promoting the profile of sail training in the islands and beyond. We have set ourselves an ambitious recruitment target for young people to take part in these incredible adventures in the lead up and including the event returning in 2023. The experience of sailing with the Tall Ships fleet and working aboard these magnificent vessels, fostering international friendships, is truly a once-in-a-life time experience not to be missed.”

More details on placements will be posted as opportunities become available.
